Visiting & Lodging

Regular museum tours are offered on the first and second Sundays from May through December, excluding holidays and cancellations.

There is no admission charge. Donations to the Friends of Shippen are welcomed but not required.

The county park site is open daily from dawn to dusk even when the museum interior is closed.

Designated accessible parking and a boardwalk entrance are available. Assistive listening devices are available for museum visitors with hearing impairments.

Oxford Furnace began construction in 1741 and produced pig iron by 1743, operating longer than any other colonial furnace in New Jersey.

In the 1830s, Oxford became the site of the first successful practical use of hot blast in the United States, improving iron-production efficiency.

The furnace site is viewed from the exterior. Pair it with Shippen Manor for the most complete interpretation of Oxford's ironmaking history.

The surrounding district contains homes, churches and industrial remnants that show how the company town evolved around the furnace and mines.

The township maintains a seasonal beach program with 2026 season passes and organized camp field-trip packages.

Kayaks, canoes and boats are popular; electric motors only are permitted to preserve the lake's quiet setting.

The lake remains a popular local fishing destination and hosts seasonal community events such as the township fishing derby.

The township offers pavilion and grove rental opportunities for groups and gatherings during the recreation season.

Current regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Visitors can follow marked walkways to view nursery operations and trout raceways from public observation areas.

The Natural Resource Education Center has 3.9 miles of trails through varied habitats for hiking, birding and nature photography.

Current programming includes fishing instruction, wildlife walks and educational events. Some programs require registration or a fee.

Twenty-two tent/trailer sites are open April 1–Oct. 31, with fire rings, picnic tables, nearby showers and toilets. The forest also offers group campsites and eight year-round shelters.

Thirty-nine tent and small-trailer sites plus six miles of marked trails, fishing and Musconetcong River recreation.

New Jersey currently designates selected family campsites at both Jenny Jump and Stephens as pet-friendly for an additional nightly fee.

Thru-hikers may use nearby state-park campgrounds and lodging, but camping and fires are prohibited directly along the Warren Highlands Trail outside designated facilities.

Regular museum days use limited back parking. When full, visitors are directed to park in town. There is no parking on Belvidere Avenue.

The small Belvidere Avenue lot at Shippen Manor is primarily reserved for visitors with mobility needs during special events.

Warren County identifies Academy Street as the designated parking point for Oxford Mountain Natural Resource Area trail access.

Overnight parking is prohibited at Warren Highlands Trail parking locations without written permission from the landowner or managing agency.
